Work
is well advanced on the Dalston Culture House and
should be completed by the end of 2004.
Expressions of interest are already being invited from
people who might like to rent studio space in it. See
details.
This stunning four storey cultural centre and arts workspace
has been designed by Hawkins\Brown
and will include many cutting edge features.
It is being built on on the western flank of the Gillett
Street car Park in Dalston, and is the first phase of
the development of Gillett
Square, which is being promoted as one of Mayor Livingstone's
new urban spaces, and supported by his Architecture and
Urbanism Unit, headed by Lord Rogers.
Among the first occupants of the Dalston Culture House
will be the world famous Vortex
Jazz Café who are
moving here from their present home in Stoke Newington.
The ground floor will house a café, a gallery/exhibition
space, and shop. The first floor will have the main performance
space, which will also be available to community groups
and voluntary sector organisations, while the top two
floors will contain studio space. The spaces are intended to be
very versatile and it is likely that, in time, the Dalston
Culture House will contain permanent performance groups
and host, as the nerve centre for the new Gillett Square
on its doorstep, a sort of ongoing inner city WOMAD.
It will not only attract big names but also showcase
and support the development of local talent from Hackney's
diverse communities. |

Dalston the new
Covent Garden of the East End!! |
The
venture is being driven forward by the Dalston Culture
House Partnership, which comprises HCD, the New
Vortex Jazz Club and the Vortex
Jazz Foundation. It has the support of many local
individuals and arts organisations. Patrons include
Charlie Watts.
Funders include Hackney Strategic
Partnership, the Greater London Authority and Groundwork
East London, the Government Office for London, the Office
of the Deputy Prime Minister, the Triodos
Bank and developers MacDonald Egan.
The Dalston Culture House will
not only give an exciting boost to the renaissance of
Dalston, it will also, together with other Hackney arts
venues, help to build a strong arts presence in East
London on a par with the attractions of the West End
and Central London. For more details of our vision for
the future of the Dalston Culture House and Gillett Square click

The Dalston Culture House Partnership is about to launch a high profile fundraising
campaign to generate the additional resources needed for immediate needs and
for the longer term development of the project to its full potential.
