Work began on Gillett
Square in early March 2006. See progress pictures.
The Gillett Street
car park area is being transformed into Gillett Square
- a vibrant town square full of retail and cultural attractions.
The new square was formally launched on
10 November. Celebrations included the performance of an original
jazz compositon involving 200 saxophonists. See
more details of the event.
The Square is scheduled for completion by December. The
Dalston Culture House, already standing on the southwest
corner, was one of the first projects in this exciting
programme. Work on a new housing development on the northern
side has started and is due for completion
this year.
The Square is being promoted as one of Mayor Livingstone's
new urban spaces, and supported by his Architecture and
Urbanism Unit, headed by Lord Rogers. The Square
recently featured
in the GLA's exhibition “Civilising Spaces” at
the New London Architecture Centre.
Gillett Square is being developed by the Gillett Square Partnership which comprises HCD, Groundwork East London, Hackney Council and developers MacDonald Egan.
Through Groundwork East London, the
Office of the Deputy Prime Minister has approved £850K for the development of the Square, along with £75K
to support a sustainable development framwork and clear
set of design principles for Dalston as a whole. The resltant
Dalston Area Action Plan is curently in the later stages
of public consultation.
