HCD is starting to determine and promote an exciting, and much needed, strategic vision for Kingsland. This area, bisected by the canal has traditionally lacked the necessary focus for regeneration, but may now be about to emerge as a new key site for community economic development.
HCD hopes to fulfil its commitment to Green Business through the development of a Green Business Centre. Built to environmentally friendly specifications the centre will provide space for up to 10 green businesses, a Hackney based resource facilitating new opportunities for green business and knowledge exchange for the whole of London.
Some details of this work are now contained in the first draft of the Kingsland Basin Framework Study and the HCD / Hawkins Brown Feasability Study for 25 Downham Rd (available soon @ this site).
We are currently working up project designs and proposals for a Green Business Centre on oursite at 25 Downham Road, which backs onto Kingsland Basin. We intend this to become a much needed point of access in East London for those wishing to trade in and promote this fast emerging part of our society and economy.   We are experiencing a growing enthusiasm for such a resource from many organisations and businesses active in this field.
It had been intended that a full funding application for this project would be made in 2004, with a target date for completion in 2005. However, LBH planning department is currently minded to refuse planning permission for the currently proposed building, and we will need to raise additional funds to deal with this obstacle. This may set the project back several years!
This project was intended to be another example of our ongoing commitment to the Kingsland corridor. Over the past three years HCD has been working with a number of partners on a string of projects along the Regents Canal in the Shoreditch Haggerston areas. These include the Haggerston Pool Trust, The Drawing Room, Laburnum Boat Club, Springboard, Canals in Hackney Users Group, Kingsland the Forum, Groundwork East London, The Learning Trust, Residents Groups and Businesses around Kingsland Basin, Investland plc.
