The Dalston Culture House

The Dalston Culture House stands on the western flank of the new Gillett Square. It was formally launched on Tuesday 15 March 2005. See details of launch .

This stunning four storey cultural centre and arts workspace was designed by Hawkins\Brown and includes many cutting edge features. The Dalston Culture House has figured prominently in many press articles as an exemplary catalyst for inner city regeneration and was short-listed for the Hackney Design awards in 2006. See Guardian review of 4 April 2005.

All its spaces are very versatile. The ground floor houses a café, a gallery/exhibition space, and shop.

The first floor has the main performance space, which is also be available to community groups and voluntary sector organisations. The first occupant is the world famous Vortex Jazz Club which opened on 19 May 2005. On 28 November 2005 there was a major fundraising event, sponsored by Vortex patron Charlie Watts at the 606 Jazz Club, featuring Kenny Wheeler and others, which raised approximately £12K. Dalston the new Covent Garden of the East End!!

The top two floors are studio space - now occupied by the well established therapeutic arts group The Studio Upstairs.

The venture has been driven forward by the Dalston Culture House Steering Group, which comprises HCD, the New Vortex Jazz Club, the Vortex Jazz Foundation (Patron Charlie Watts) and The Studio Upstairs. It has has the support of many local individuals and arts organisations.

The Dalston Culture House is already giving an exciting boost to the renaissance of Dalston, it also, together with other Hackney arts venues, is helping to build a strong arts presence in East London on a par with the attractions of the West End and Central London.

Funders included Hackney Strategic Partnership, the Greater London Authority and Groundwork East London, the Government Office for London, the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (now the Dept for Communities and Local Government (DCLG)), the Triodos Bank and developers MacDonald Egan.

HCD is currently completing an extension to the Culture House that will accommodate the Gillett Square management group and other arts groups.
