| The Dalston Culture House |
The
Dalston Culture House stands on the western flank
of the new Gillett
Square. It was formally launched on Tuesday
15 March 2005. See
details of launch .
This stunning four storey
cultural centre and arts workspace was designed
by Hawkins\Brown and includes many cutting edge features. The Dalston Culture House has figured prominently in many press articles as an exemplary catalyst for inner city regeneration and was short-listed for the Hackney Design awards in 2006. See
Guardian review of 4 April 2005.
All its spaces are
very versatile. The ground floor houses a
café,
a gallery/exhibition space, and shop.
The first floor
has the main performance space, which is also
be available to community groups and voluntary sector
organisations. The first occupant
is the world famous Vortex
Jazz Club which opened on 19 May 2005. On 28
November 2005 there was a major fundraising event,
sponsored by Vortex patron Charlie Watts at the 606
Jazz Club, featuring Kenny Wheeler and others,
which raised approximately £12K. Click
here for details.
